Prayer of Saint Benedict
The Cross of our Holy Father Benedict.
May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death.
May the Holy Cross by my light.
May the dragon never be my overlord.
Begone Satan. Never tempt me with your vanities.
What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!
These are the words of a prayer attributed to a man whose life I will spend the rest of my earthly life trying to understand and follow. St. Benedict, my patron Saint and early father of Western Monasticism (480-547), was a man of great spiritual devotion and discipline. There is no Saint who ever lived who did not wrestle with temptation and did not have to overcome it. St. Benedict possessed the ability to hold himself accountable to Christ through numerous and unvarnished attacks from the devil – all the while claiming God’s peace and leading others to do the same.
This musical setting is meant to encapsulate the human struggle with Satan and all the evil spirits, as well as reinforce the peace that we not only seek, but find in surrendering to Christ. This setting begins and ends with the word that I pray are bookends to our own earthly lives – “peace”.
